For homeowner’s insurance (and even those who rent), here’s something a lot of people don’t do but should—take inventory of your belongings and valuables in a way that can be used if you’re ever in need of a claim due to theft, fire, or water damage. There are three keys to making this work for you:
- First, be visual and detailed about what you’re recording. That means a photo, a video scan of the room, and a line list of the items by room.
- Next, create a system for updating this at least on a quarterly basis or whenever a substantial new item is added to your possession.
- Finally, keep a copy of this in the cloud or offsite where it can be accessed safely by you outside of your main place of residency.
