Planning Ahead: Your list of 5 things to do this fall.

10/15/2019

Some of these may seem obvious, but if these mundane tasks don't make it to the to-do list, they probably won't get done. As you go through this list, think of a few other ways you can prepare your areas of coverage to ensure you get the maximum amount of protection.

  1. Clean out your gutters, or better yet, hire someone to do it for you. This ultimately helps prevent ice dams during the winter, which can cause roof damage and water leaks.
  2. Check that you have the right number of fire extinguishers in your home, and that they’re not expired. Same goes for smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors (which you should test on a regular basis). Put it on your calendar to do a thorough check.
  3. Clean out your dryer vent from the outside in.
  4. Use battery-operated candles vs the real deal when you can. The new options look very real, create the same ambiance, and mitigate the risk of open-flame candles.
  5. Get your tires checked for winter traction. The quality of the tire tread makes a huge impact during icy and snowy weather conditions and can be the difference between staying on the road and ending up in the ditch.

Remember, prevention never goes out of season! Make a to-do list specific to your own home and yard, and make a habit of properly pampering your property on a regular basis.

Have you taken inventory of your home?

For homeowner's insurance (and even those who rent), here’s something a lot of people don’t do but should—take inventory of your belongings and valuables in a way that can be used if you're ever in need of a claim due to theft, fire, or water damage. There are three keys to making this work for you:
  • First, be visual and detailed about what you’re recording. That means a photo, a video scan of the room, and a line list of the items by room.
  • Next, create a system for updating this at least on a quarterly basis or whenever a substantial new item is added to your possession.
  • Finally, keep a copy of this in the cloud or offsite where it can be accessed safely by you outside of your main place of residency.

Mike Feterl joined our team of licensed agents this summer, and we’ve been enjoying what he brings to the table, which is a whole lot of local know-how and community support. Mike was born and raised in South Dakota before moving to the Arlington community when he was a kid. He has lived there ever since, and is now raising his own family with his wife.

Mike also brings expertise to his role as insurance agent, and is dedicated to bringing the best coverage prices to small hometown communities throughout our area. He primarily works out of our Gaylord office, but has been spotted all over town this summer as he hit the ground running on his very first day. We’re lucky to have you Mike, welcome (officially) to the Alloy team!
